Indications/Uses
Prevention & treatment of damages due to faulty or deficient protein metabolism in chronic kidney disease in connection w/ a limited dietary protein intake of ≤40 g/day in adult; usually to patients whose GFR is <25 mL/min.
Monitor serum Ca level regularly. Ensure sufficient calorie intake. Presence of hereditary phenylketonuria (contains phenylalanine). Monitor serum phosphate levels in case of concomitant administration of Al hydroxide. Pregnancy & lactation.
May cause or aggravate elevated serum Ca levels w/ Ca-containing drugs. Drugs that form hardly soluble compd w/ Ca (eg, tetracyclines, ciprofloxacin, norfloxacin, drug containing Fe, fluoride or estramustine). Increased risk for arrhythmia w/ cardioactive glycosides. Concomitant use w/ Al hydroxide (reduce dose if necessary).
