Inactivated flu vaccine (surface antigen)
Indications/Uses
Prophylaxis for flu especially those who run an increased risk of associated complications.
Dosage/Direction for Use
IM/deep SC inj Adult & childn 36 mth onwards 0.5 mL, 6-35 mth 0.25-0.5 mL. Childn not previously vaccinated 2nd dose at an interval of at least 4 wk should be given.
Contraindications
Hypersensitivity to eggs (ovalbumin, chicken protein) formaldehyde, cetyltrimethylammonium Br, polysorbate 80, gentamicin. Postpone immunization in patients w/ febrile illness or acute infection.
Special Precautions
Should not be administered intravascularly. Anxiety-related reactions, including syncope, hyperventilation or stressed-related reactions can occur following or before any vaccination as a psychogenic response to the needle inj. Insufficient Ab response in patients w/ endogenous or iatrogenic immunosuppression.
Adverse Reactions
Headache, myalgia, fatigue, malaise, local reactions (pain, redness, swelling, induration), sweating, arthralgia, fever, shivering, location reaction (ecchymosis).
Drug Interactions
False +ve results in serology tests using the ELISA method.
