Hyoscine-N-butylbromide
Indications/Uses
Tab: Symptomatic relief of abdominal pain, cramps & discomfort including menstrual cramps, spasm of the biliary system & urinary tract. Symptomatic relief of irritable bowel syndrome (IBS). Inj: Symptomatic relief of GI & genitourinary disorders characterized by smooth muscle spasms. Spasm of the biliary system. Irritable bowel syndrome (IBS). Aids to produce smooth muscle relaxation prior to radiological or diagnostic procedures eg, gastroduodenal endoscopy.
Dosage/Direction for Use
Tab Adult & adolescent >12 yr Usual dose: 1-2 tab every 4-6 hr. IBS Initially 1 tab tid, may be increased if further relief is necessary. Childn 6-12 yr Usual dose: 1 tab tid. Slow IV/IM/SC inj Adult & adolescent >12 yr 20-40 mg several times a day. As a continuous infusion of 5 mg/hr for up to 4 days. Max: 100 mg/day. Infant & childn up to 12 yr Severe cases 0.3-0.6 mg/kg several times a day. Max: 1.2 mg/kg/day.
Administration
May be taken with or without food.
Special Precautions
Patients w/ Down's syndrome, hepatic or renal disease & hyperthyroidism, conditions characterized by tachycardia, gastric ulcer, GERD, hiatal hernia reflux esophagitis, autonomic neuropathy, partial obstructive uropathy & diarrhea, those w/ known or suspected GI infections eg, C. difficile-associated diarrhea & colitis, shigellosis & dysentery, mild to moderate ulcerative colitis, pyrexia. Increased IOP. Anaphylaxis has been reported after parenteral administration.
Adverse Reactions
Xerostomia, dry skin, accommodation disorders, blurred vision, cycloplegia, mydriasis, photophobia, anhidrosis, urinary hesitancy & retention, transient bradycardia (followed by tachycardia, hypotension, palpitations & arrhythmia), reduced bronchial secretions, xerophthalmia, & constipation.
