Metformin HCl
Indications/Uses
Treatment of NIDDM, alone as an initial therapy or w/ a sulfonylurea. Adjuvant in IDDM (type I) patients who are not adequately controlled w/ insulin.
Dosage/Direction for Use
Individualized dosage. Recommended dose: 500 mg tid or 850 mg bid. May be gradually increased to max 3 g daily.
Administration
Should be taken with food.
Contraindications
Hypersensitivity. Renal disease or dysfunction; chronic liver disease; cardiac failure, recent MI; acute or chronic metabolic acidosis including diabetic ketoacidosis w/ or w/o coma. History of or states associated w/ lactic acidosis or hypoxemia. Alcoholism.
Special Precautions
Stop treatment 2-3 days before surgery or clinical investigations (eg, IV urography or IV angiography). Conditions which may cause dehydration. Patients suffering from serious infections or trauma. Monitor renal function regularly & vit B12 level annually; blood glucose level (when given in combination w/ a sulfonylurea). Pregnancy & lactation.
Adverse Reactions
GI disturbances eg, anorexia, nausea, vomiting, diarrhea, flatulence, metallic taste.
Drug Interactions
Cimetidine, anticoagulants. Increased Cmax & AUC; decreased renal clearance w/ cefalexin.
