Indications/Uses
Chronic management of hyperuricemia in patients w/ gout.
Dosage/Direction for Use
40-80 mg once daily. Initially 40 mg once daily. Patient who do not achieve serum uric acid <6 mg/dL after 2 wk w/ 40 mg 80 mg.
Administration
May be taken with or without food: May be taken w/o regard to antacid use.
Contraindications
Patients treated w/ azathioprine, mercaptopurine or theophylline.
Special Precautions
Risk of gout flare, MI & stroke. Severe renal & hepatic impairment. Patients w/ secondary hyperuricemia; malignant disease & its treatment, Lesch-Nyhan syndrome. Lactation. Childn <18 yr.
Adverse Reactions
Disorders of blood & lymphatic system, cardiac, ear & labyrinth, eye, GI. General disorders & administration site conditions; hepatobiliary, immune system disorders; infections & infestations, procedural complications; metabolism & nutrition, nervous system, psychiatric, renal & urinary disorders; reproductive system & breast changes; resp, thoracic & mediastinal disorders; skin & SC tissue, vascular disorders.
Drug Interactions
Xanthine oxidase substrate inhibition which may cause increased plasma conc of theophylline, mercaptopurine, azathioprine.
