Indications/Uses
Cream: Secondary infected traumatic lesions eg, small lacerations, sutured wounds or abrasions (up to 10 cm in length or 100 cm2 in area) due to susceptible strains of Staph aureus & Staph pyogenes. Oint: Skin infections eg, infected hair follicles which form pimples containing pus (folliculitis), infectious skin infection w/ blistering & crusting (impetigo) or; recurring boils (furunculosis); to kill various bacteria which cause other skin infections including Staphylococci, Streptococci & E. coli; MRSA.
Dosage/Direction for Use
Cream Adult/childn ≥1 yr/elderly Apply a thin layer to affected area w/ a piece of clean cotton wool or gauze swab tid for up to 10 days. May be covered by a dressing. Patient not showing a clinical response w/in 3-5 days should be re-evaluated. Duration: Do not exceed 10 days. Oint Apply to infected area bid-tid for 10 days. May cover treated area w/ a plaster or suitable dressing.
Contraindications
Special Precautions
Do not mix w/ other prep/any other external cream or oint medicines. Discontinue/stop treatment/use if possible sensitisation reaction or severe local irritation/skin reactions or allergies occur. Cream: Prolonged use may result in overgrowth of non-susceptible organisms. Pseudomembranous colitis. Discontinue if prolonged or significant diarrhoea occurs or patient experiences abdominal cramps. Not suitable for ophth & intranasal use. Avoid contact w/ eyes. Pregnancy & lactation. Not to be used in childn/infants <1 yr. Oint: External use only. Do not use for >10 days. Do not stop use too early as not all bacteria may have been killed or may continue to grow.
Adverse Reactions
Cream: Application site hypersensitivity reactions including urticaria, pruritus, erythema, burning sensation, contact dermatitis, rash; skin dryness. Oint: Burning sensation. Itchiness, redness, stinging & dryness; allergic rash or soreness of the skin.
Drug Interactions
Cream: Risk of dilution w/ other prep resulting in a reduction in the antibacterial activity & potential loss of stability of mupirocin. Oint: Any other external cream or oint medicines may reduce the effectiveness of mupirocin.
