Indications/Uses
Bronchial asthma & pulmonary disease w/ spastic bronchial component.
Dosage/Direction for Use
Adult 1 tab bid-tid. May decrease to ½ tab bid based on prescription on elderly or w/ concomitant CV, hepatic, renal or gastric disease. Childn 12 mg/kg daily, divided into 2 doses. Can be increased up to 18 mg/kg daily.
Contraindications
Hypersensitivity. Acute MI, hypotension. Lactation.
Special Precautions
Patients w/ HTN, heart disease, hypoxemia, hyperthyroidism, chronic right ventricular failure, CHF, liver disease, history of peptic ulcer. Concomitant use w/ erythromycin, troleandomycin, lincomycin, allopurinol, cimetidine, propranolol & anti-flu vaccine; phenytoin, other anticonvulsants. Smoking. Lab monitoring of plasma conc. Elderly.
Adverse Reactions
Nausea, vomiting; cephalalgia (headache), irritability, insomnia; palpitations, tachycardia. Severe arrhythmia; seizure.
Drug Interactions
Do not administer w/ other xanthine derivatives. Toxic synergism w/ ephedrine. May decrease hepatic clearance w/ erythromycin, troleandomycin, lincomycin, clindamycin, allopurinol, cimetidine, ranitidine, propranolol & anti-flu vaccine. May increase in clearance w/ shorter mean t½ w/ phenytoin, other anti-convulsants & smoking.
