Indications/Uses
Treatment of Fe deficiency anemia in patients undergoing chronic hemodialysis receiving supplemental erythropoietin therapy.
Dosage/Direction for Use
Individualised dosage according to the total Fe deficit. Adult & elderly 5-10 mL IV (100-200 mg); Childn 0.15 mL IV/kg (3 mg/kg). To be taken 2-3 times wkly depending on Hb level. Max dose IV: 10 mL (200 mg) injected in at least 10 min. Infusion 0.35 mL inj/kg (7 mg/kg) not exceeding 25 mL, diluted in 500 mL of 0.9% NaCl & infused over at least 3.5 hr once a wk.
Contraindications
Anemia not caused by Fe deficiency, overload or disturbances in utilization of Fe.
Special Precautions
Patients w/ history of asthma, eczema, anaphylaxis & other allergic disorders. Oral Fe therapy should be started 5 days after the last Fe inj. Pregnancy.
Adverse Reactions
Metallic taste, headache, nausea, vomiting, diarrhea, hypotension, elevated liver enzymes, cramps, chest pain, dizziness, dyspnea, pneumonia, cough & pruritus.
Drug Interactions
Do not co-administer w/ oral Fe prep.
