Contents
Per cap Vit B1 10 mg, nicotinamide 30 mg, vit B6 5 mg, vit B12 25 mcg, Fe fumarate 320 mg (equiv to elemental Fe 105.4 mg). Per 5 mL syr Fe sulfate 220 mg (equiv to elemental Fe 44 mg). Per 0.6 mL oral drops Fe sulfate 75 mg (equiv to elemental Fe 15 mg)
Indications/Uses
Fe-deficiency anemia. Cap: All types of anemia as in pregnancy & convalescence, adolescence, blood loss, severe infections; vit B-complex deficiencies.
Dosage/Direction for Use
Cap 1 cap once daily or bid. Syr Adult Treatment 100-200 mg daily in divided doses. Prophylaxis 60-120 mg daily. Childn Treatment Up to 2 mg/kg tid. Prophylaxis 1 mg/kg daily. Drops Treatment 6 mg/kg daily in divided doses. Prophylaxis 500 mcg-1 mg/kg daily as a single dose or in divided doses.
Administration
Should be taken on an empty stomach: May be taken w/ meals to reduce GI discomfort.
Special Precautions
Patients receiving repeated blood transfusions or w/ anemia not produced by Fe deficiency. Patients w/ Fe-storage or Fe-absorption diseases. Cap: Existing GI disease. Syr: Diluted well w/ water & swallow through a straw to prevent teeth discoloration. Syr/drops: Concomitant use w/ parenteral Fe.
Adverse Reactions
Syr/drops: GI irritation & abdominal pain w/ nausea & vomiting, diarrhea or constipation. Blackened teeth & feces. Drops: Fe overload w/ hemosiderosis.
Drug Interactions
May impair absorption by formation of insoluble complexes w/ compd containing Ca & Mg including antacids & mineral supplements & bicarbonates, carbonates, oxalates or phosphates. Diminished absorption of both Fe salts & tetracyclines if taken concomitantly. May decrease absorption w/ Zn salts. May increase absorption w/ ascorbic acid & citric acid. Delayed response to Fe w/ systemic chloramphenicol. Decrease absorption, bioavailability & clinical effect of biphosphates, entacapone, fluoroquinolones, levodopa, methyldopa, penicillamine & tetracycline. May reduce efficacy of thyroxin (levothyroxine).
