Betahistine HCl
Indications/Uses
Treatment of vertigo, tinnitus & hearing loss associated w/ Meniere's syndrome. Symptomatic treatment of vertigo of peripheral origin.
Dosage/Direction for Use
Initial: 8-16 mg tid or 24 mg bid. Maintenance: 24-48 mg daily in divided doses. Max: 48 mg daily.
Administration
Should be taken with food.
Contraindications
Hypersensitivity. Pheochromocytoma; history or active peptic ulcer.
Special Precautions
Bronchial asthma & COPD w/ bronchospastic component. History of allergic skin conditions; porphyria. Avoid concurrent use w/ antihistamines. Mild GI irritation. Pregnancy & lactation. Childn <18 yr.
Adverse Reactions
Vomiting, diarrhea, GI pain, nausea, dyspepsia, abdominal cramps & distention, bloating; tiredness, malaise; dizziness, headache, drowsiness, insomnia & throbbing pulsation; angioneurotic edema, rash, pruritus & urticaria; SJS; vasodilation, postural hypotension, tachycardia & ventricular extrasystoles; dyspnea, asthma, bronchospasms.
Drug Interactions
Inhibited metabolism by MAOIs including MAO subtype B (eg, selegiline). MAO B selective inhibitors. May decrease effects of β2-agonists. Potentiation w/ salbutamol. Ethanol & maloprim.
