Oxytocin
Indications/Uses
Induction & augmentation of labor, to control postpartum bleeding & uterine hypotonicity in 3rd stage of labor. Promotes lactation in cases of faulty milk ejection.
Dosage/Direction for Use
IM/IV/SC Induction or enhancement of labor 5-10 IU IM or 5 IU IV slowly. Caesarian section 5 IU after delivery.
Contraindications
Hypersensitivity. Hypertonic contractions, cephalopelvic disproportion, excessive distention of the uterus as in multiple pregnancy, hydramnios.
Special Precautions
Careful obstet monitoring under hospital setting.
Adverse Reactions
Uterine rupture & soft tissue damage (high dose). Headache, nausea, vomiting, skin rashes, cardiac arrhythmias, pelvic hematoma, anaphylactic & other hypersensitivity reactions.
Drug Interactions
May enhance vasopressor effects of sympathomimetics. May enhance hypotensive effect & reduce oxytocic effect w/ some inhalational anesth eg, cyclopropane or halothane. May potentiate the effects of each other w/ prostaglandins; should not be started 6 hr after vag prostaglandins use.
