Tranexamic acid
Indications/Uses
Treatment & prophylaxis of hemorrhage associated w/ excessive fibrinolysis. Prophylaxis of hereditary angioedema.
Dosage/Direction for Use
5-10 mL by slow IV inj at 1 mL/min bid-tid. Prostatectomy 5-10 mL by slow IV inj every 8 hr (the 1st inj given during the operation) for the 1st 3 days after surgery. Epistaxis Apply topically to the nasal mucosa by soaking a gauze strip in the soln & then packing the nasal cavity. Dental surgery in patient w/ haemophilia 10 mg/kg by IV immediately before surgery for short-term use (2-8 days). General fibrinolysis 1 g (10 mL) by slow IV inj tid-qid. Renal insufficiency serum creatinine level >500 micromol/L 5 mg/kg IV every 24 hr, 20-500 micromol/L 10 mg/kg every 24 hr, 120-250 micromol/L 10 mg/kg bid.
Contraindications
Hypersensitivity. Active thromboembolic disease eg, DVT, pulmonary embolism & cerebral thrombosis; subarachnoid haemorrhage. Patients w/ acquired defective color vision.
Special Precautions
Patients w/ irregular menstrual bleeding, high risk for thrombosis (previous thromboembolic event & family history of thromboembolic disease), disseminated intravascular coagulation. Haematuria from the upper from the upper urinary tract blood clots. Do not use in patients w/ acquired defective color vision. Perform regular eye exam (visual acuity, color vision, eyegrounds, field of vision) on long-term treatment. Renal insufficiency. Pregnancy & lactation.
Adverse Reactions
Nausea, vomiting, diarrhoea. Dizziness &/or hypotension during rapid IV inj.
Drug Interactions
Do not add to blood transfusion or penicillin-containing inj.
