Indications/Uses
Topical skin anesth prior to IV insertion, catheters & blood sampling. Superficial surgical procedures, anesth of the genital mucosa.
Dosage/Direction for Use
Skin Apply a thick layer to the skin & cover w/ an occlusive dressing. Adult Needle insertion eg, IV lines, taking blood samples Approx 2 g/10 cm2. Minor procedure: Approx ½ tube (2 g) for a min of 1 hr, max 5 hr. Dermal procedure on larger area: Approx 1.5-2 g/10 cm2 for a min of 2 hr, max 5 hr. Minor superficial surgical procedures 1.5-2 g per 10 cm2. A thick layer of cream is applied to the skin & covered w/ an occlusive dressing for a min of 1 hr, max 5 hr. More extensive superficial surgical procedures 1.5-2 g per 10 cm2. A thick layer of cream is applied to the skin & covered w/ an occlusive dressing for a min of 2 hr, max 5 hr. Large areas of newly shaven skin (OPD) Max: 60 g. Max treatment area: 600 cm2 min of 1 hr, max 5 hr. Leg ulcers 1-2 g/10 cm2 for 30 min. Genital mucosa Men 1 g per 10 cm2 for 15 min. Women 1-2 g per 10 cm2 for 1 hr. Mucosa 5-10 g for 5-10 min. Childn Needle insertion Max: 1 g/10 cm2. 0-3 mth Max: 1 g/10 cm2, max of 1 hr, 3-12 mth Max: 2 g/20 cm2 for 1 hr, 1-6 yr Max: 10 g/100 cm2 for a min of 1 hr, max of 5 hr, 6-12 yr 20 g/200 cm2 for a min of 1 hr, max of 5 hr. Atopic dermatitis Reduce the application time to 30 min.
Contraindications
Congenital or idiopathic methemoglobinemia. Infant <3 mth & between 3 & 12 mth receiving treatment w/ methemoglobin-inducing agents. Open sores. Genital mucosa of childn.
Special Precautions
Do not apply to open wounds, genital mucosa of childn, impaired tympanic membrane. Atopic dermatitis. Care when applied in the vicinity of the eyes. Patients treated w/ class III antiarrhythmic drugs eg, amiodarone. Must not be used in connection w/ intracutaneous inj of live vaccines eg, BCG. Methemoglobinemia.
Adverse Reactions
Local reactions eg, paleness, redness, edema, burning or itching sensation.
Drug Interactions
Increased risk of methemoglobinemia w/ sulfonamides.
