Pantoprazole
Indications/Uses
Treatment & relief of acid-related dyspepsia, GERD, NSAID-associated ulceration, Zollinger-Ellison syndrome & management of PUD. Prophylaxis of acid aspiration during general anesth.
Dosage/Direction for Use
GERD 20-40 mg once daily for 4 wk. Dyspepsia 10-20 mg daily for 2-4 wk. PUD 20 mg daily as single dose or 40 mg in severe case. NSAID-associated ulceration 20 mg daily. Zollinger-Ellison syndrome 40 mg once daily. Acid aspiration prophylaxis during general anesth 40 mg in the evening before surgery & a further 40 mg 2-6 hr before the procedure.
Administration
Should be taken on an empty stomach: Take 1 hr before breakfast. Swallow whole, do not chew/crush.
Contraindications
Special Precautions
Possibility of malignancy in gastric ulcer patients should be excluded. Hepatic impairment. Pregnancy & lactation.
Adverse Reactions
Headache, diarrhea, skin rashes; pruritus, fatigue, constipation, nausea, vomiting, flatulence, abdominal pain, arthralgia, myalgia, urticaria & dry mouth; increased risk of GI infections.
Drug Interactions
May reduce absorption of ampicillin esters, Fe salts or ketoconazole. Delayed elimination & increased blood conc w/ anticoagulants (coumarin or indadione-derivative), diazepam or phenytoin. Increased leukopenic &/or thrombocytopenic effects w/ bone marrow depressants.
