Loperamide HCl

Indications/Uses

Acute non-specific diarrhea; chronic diarrhea associated w/ inflammatory bowel disease. Reduction of number & vol of discharge in patients w/ ileostomies & colostomies.

Dosage/Direction for Use

Adult Acute diarrhea 2 cap followed by 1 cap after each loose bowel movement. Max: 16 mg/day (8 cap). Discontinue if there is no improvement after 2 days. Chronic diarrhea 2 cap followed by 1 cap after each loose bowel movement. Maintenance dose: 2-4 cap/day.

Overdosage

Administration

May be taken with or without food.

Contraindications

Hypersensitivity. Constipation; swollen abdomen or abdominal pain; acute dysentry; pseudomembranous colitis, active ulcerative colitis, meningitis or history of liver disease. Pregnancy & lactation. Childn <12 yr.

Special Precautions

Acute diarrhea >2 days, abdominal swelling or bulging develops, fever. Decreased urination, dizziness & lightheadedness, dryness of mouth, increased thirst, wrinkled skin.

Adverse Reactions

Dry mouth, abdominal pain, distention or discomfort, nausea, vomiting, fatigue, flatulence, dyspepsia, constipation, epigastric pain, paralytic ileus, toxic megacolon. Rarely, drowsiness & dizziness; pruritus, rash, urticaria, angioedema & bullous eruption including SJS, erythema multiforme, & TEN. Very rarely, allergic reactions including unexplained wheezing, shortness of breath, passing out or face & throat swelling.
