Clobetasol propionate
Indications/Uses
Relief of the inflammatory & pruritic manifestations of steroid responsive dermatoses including psoriasis (excluding widespread plaque psoriasis), recalcitrant dermatoses, lichen planus, discoid lupus erythematosus, other skin conditions which do not respond satisfactorily to less potent steroids, for adults, elderly & childn >1 yr.
Dosage/Direction for Use
Apply thinly & gently rub the affected area once or bid for up to 4 wk until improvement occurs. Max: 50 g/wk.
Contraindications
Untreated cutaneous infections, rosacea; acne vulgaris; perioral dermatitis; perianal & genital pruritus; pruritus w/o inflammation; dermatoses in childn <1 yr including dermatitis.
Special Precautions
History of local hypersensitivity to corticosteroids. Avoid abrupt w/drawal. W/draw gradually if manifestations of hypercortisolism (Cushing's syndrome) & reversible hypothalamic-pituitary-adrenal axis suppression occur & if there is spread of infection. Increased risk of systemic effects; infection when use for the treatment of dermatitis in chronic leg ulcers & w/ use of occlusive dressings. Caution in psoriasis as rebound relapses, development of tolerances, risk of generalised pustular psoriasis & development of local or systemic toxicity due to impaired barrier function of the skin. Application to the face & eyelids. Psoriasis. Pregnancy & lactation. Long-term continuous use in infants & childn <12 yr.
Adverse Reactions
Drug Interactions
Increased systemic exposure w/ drugs that can inhibit CYP3A4 (eg, ritonavir, itraconazole).
