Tranexamic acid
Indications/Uses
Treatment & prophylaxis of haemorrhage associated w/ excessive fibrinolysis. Prophylaxis of hereditary angioedema.
Dosage/Direction for Use
Slow IV inj 0.5-1 g (or 10-15 mg/kg) tid. Continuous infusion at rate of 25-50 mg/kg daily. Childn 10 mg/kg bid or tid.
Special Precautions
Patients w/ active intravascular clotting, predisposition to thrombosis; haematuria. Hemorrhage due to disseminated intravascular coagulation. Lysis of existing extravascular clots may be inhibited. Renal impairment. Patients after a subarachnoid hemorrhage. Avoid rapid IV use. Perform regular eye exam & liver function tests for long-term use.
Adverse Reactions
GI disturbances; hypotension (after rapid IV), thrombotic complications; transient disturbance of color vision, hypersensitivity skin reactions.
Drug Interactions
Drugs w/ actions on haemostasis. Potential for thrombus formation may be increased by estrogens eg, action of antifibrinolytic antagonized by compd eg, thrombolytics.
