Fluticasone propionate
Indications/Uses
Relief of the inflammatory & pruritic manifestations of corticosteroid responsive dermatoses.
Dosage/Direction for Use
Adult, elderly, childn & infant ≥3 mth Apply thinly & gently rub to the affected area once or bid for up to 4 wk.
Contraindications
Untreated cutaneous infections, rosacea, acne vulgaris, perioral dermatitis, perianal & genital pruritus, pruritus w/o inflammation. Dermatoses in infant <3 mth including dermatitis & nappy rash.
Special Precautions
History of local hypersensitivity to corticosteroids. Avoid abrupt w/drawal. Manifestations of hypercortisolism (Cushing's syndrome) & reversible hypothalamic-pituitary-adrenal (HPA) axis suppression can occur due to increased systemic absorption. Increased systemic effects. Psoriasis. Prolonged application to face. Avoid contact w/ eyes. Discontinue use if inflammatory lesions become infected. Risk of bacterial infection w/ use of occlusive dressings. Caution when use for the treatment of dermatitis in chronic leg ulcers. Pregnancy & lactation. Long-term continuous use in infants & childn <12 yr.
Adverse Reactions
Very rare: Opportunistic infection; hypersensitivity; increased wt/obesity, delayed wt gain/growth retardation in childn, cushingoid features, decreased endogenous cortisol levels, hyperglycemia/glucosuria, HTN, osteoporosis, cataract, glaucoma; skin thinning, atrophy, striae, telangiectasias, pigmentation changes, hypertrichosis, allergic contact dermatitis, exacerbation of underlying symptoms, pustular psoriasis, erythema, rash, urticaria.
Drug Interactions
CYP3A4 inhibitors eg, ritonavir, itraconazole.
