Indications/Uses
Common bacterial infections eg, tonsillitis, sinusitis, otitis media, acute & chronic bronchitis, pneumonia, thoracic emphysema, lung abscess, boils & abscesses, cellulitis, wound infection, intra-abdominal sepsis, cystitis, urethritis, nephropyelitis, septic abortion, pelvic infection, chancroid, gonorrhea & osteomyelitis.
Dosage/Direction for Use
Administration
May be taken with or without food: Take w/ meals if GI discomfort occurs.
Contraindications
Hypersensitivity. Infectious mononucleosis; history of cholestatic jaundice or hepatic dysfunction.
Special Precautions
History of hypersensitivity to penicillins, cephalosporin or sensitivity to multiple allergens. Patients w/ severe liver disorder, moderate or severe renal disorder; predisposing allergic reactions eg, bronchial asthma, rash & urticaria; poor oral intake or receiving parenteral nutrition or aged patients; hepatic dysfunction. Erythema eruption associated w/ glandular fever. Nonsensitive bacterial overgrowth may occur w/ prolonged treatment. May result in false +ve reactions for glucose in urine test using Clinitest, Benedict's or Fehling's soln. Pregnancy & lactation.
Adverse Reactions
Diarrhea, pseudomembranous colitis, emesis, indigestion, nausea, stomatitis; moderate rise in AST &/or ALT; skin rashes (urticarial & erythematous); angioedema, anaphylaxis, serum sickness-like syndrome, hypersensitivity vasculitis; reversible leukopenia (including hypoeosinophilia & granulocytopenia), thrombocytopenia & hemolytic anemia, thrombocytopenic purpura, eosinophilia, leukosis, agranulocytosis; convulsion.
Drug Interactions
Increased bleeding & prothrombin time w/ anticoagulants. May reduce efficacy of OCs. Disulfiram. Amoxicillin: Decreased renal tubular secretion w/ probenecid. Increased incidence of rashes w/ allopurinol.
