Generalized sensitivity reaction can develop w/in few hr or wk of commencing treatment. Supra-infection w/
C. albicans, other fungi or organisms may occur. Risk of neurotoxicity & CHF in administration of high doses in patients w/ renal impairment. Electrolyte balance disturbance may occur following administration of large doses. Increased liver enzymes. Monitor renal & haematological systems during prolonged & high-dose therapy. Patients w/ syphilis may exhibit Jarisch-Herxheimer reaction. Use a skin test for sensitivity to determine patients who are most likely to develop allergic reactions to penicillin.
