Ciprofloxacin HCl
Indications/Uses
Treatment of a wide range of infections including anthrax, biliary tract, bone & joint, lower resp tract, urinary tract & skin (including soft tissue) infections; infected bites & stings, cat scratch disease, chancroid, exacerbations of cystic fibrosis, gastroenteritis, gonorrhea, Legionnaire's disease, otitis externa, otitis media, peritonitis, Q-fever, septicemia, spotted fevers, typhoid & paratyphoid fever, typhus.
Dosage/Direction for Use
Adult 250-750 mg bid. Acute exacerbations of cystic fibrosis associated w/ Pseudomonas aeruginosa Adolescent & childn ≥5 yr 20 mg/kg bid. Max: 750 mg bid. Gonorrhea 250 or 500 mg as a single dose. Meningococcal meningitis prophylaxis 500 mg as a single dose. Surgical infection prophylaxis 750 mg as a single dose 60-90 min pre-op.
Administration
May be taken with or without food: May be taken w/ meals to minimize GI discomfort. Do not take w/ antacids, Fe or dairy products.
Special Precautions
Epilepsy or history of CNS disorders. Hepatic or renal impairment, G6PD deficiency or myasthenia gravis. Discontinue in case of tendon pain, inflammation or rupture. Maintain adequate fluid intake during treatment. Avoid excessive alkalinity of the urine, exposure to strong sunlight & sunlamps. MRSA infections. May impair ability to drive or operate machinery.
Adverse Reactions
GI disturbances including nausea, vomiting, diarrhea, abdominal pain, dyspepsia. Headache, dizziness, restlessness, tremor, drowsiness, insomnia, nightmares, visual & other sensory disturbances. Rash & pruritus. Photosensitivity. Transient increase in serum creatinine or BUN.
