Ciprofloxacin HCl monohydrate
Indications/Uses
Treatment of wide range of infections including inhalation anthrax, bacterial exacerbations bronchitis, bone & joint infections, infectious diarrhea, endocervical & urethral gonorrhea; intra-abdominal, lower resp tract, skin & soft tissue infections; bacterial prostatitis, acute sinusitis, typhoid fever, bacterial UTI.
Dosage/Direction for Use
Adult Inhalation anthrax 500 mg (base) every 12 hr for 60 days. Bone & joint infections: Mild to moderate 500 mg (base) every 12 hr for at least 4-6 wk; severe or complicated 750 mg (base) every 12 hr for at least 4-6 wk. Mild to severe infectious diarrhea 500 mg (base) every 12 hr for 5-7 days. Endocervical & urethral gonorrhea 250 mg (base) as single dose. Intra-abdominal infections 500 mg (base) every 12 hr for at least 7-14 days in combination w/ oral Metronidazole. Lower resp tract, skin & soft tissue infections: Mild to moderate 500 mg (base) every 12 hr for at least 7-14 days; severe or complicated 750 mg (base) every 12 hr for 7-14 days. Mild to moderate chronic prostatitis 500 mg (base) every 12 hr for 28 days. Mild to moderate sinusitis or typhoid fever 500 mg (base) every 12 hr for 10 days. Acute complicated UTI 100 mg (base) every 12 hr for 3 days; mild to moderate 250 mg (base) every 12 hr for 7-14 days; severe or complicated 500 mg (base) every 12 hr for 7-14 days. Max: 1.5 g (base) daily. Childn up to 18 yr Given only when alternative therapy could not be used. Inhalation anthrax 15 mg/kg/dose (base). Max: 500 mg/dose, every 12 hr for 60 days. Other infections 10-15 mg (base)/kg bid, up to 1.5 g/day. Elderly Adult dose.
Administration
May be taken with or without food: May be taken w/ meals to minimize GI discomfort. Do not take w/ antacids, Fe or dairy products.
Contraindications
Hypersensitivity to quinolones. History of tendinitis. Epilepsy. Hepatic & renal impairment.
Special Precautions
Pregnancy & lactation. Childn & adolescent. Elderly.
Adverse Reactions
Dizziness, light headedness, headache, nervousness, drowsiness, insomnia, mild abdominal or stomach pain or discomfort, mild diarrhea, nausea or vomiting.
Drug Interactions
Aminophylline, oxtriphylline, theophylline, Mg & Al antacids, Fe sulfate, Zn, sucralfate, phenytoin, cyclosporine, didanosine, warfarin.
