Desogestrel
Dosage/Direction for Use
1 tab daily for 28 consecutive days at about the same time (day 1 is the 1st day of menstrual bleeding).
Administration
May be taken with or without food.
Contraindications
Hypersensitivity. Active venous thromboembolic disorder. Presence or history of severe hepatic disease as long as liver function values have not returned to normal. Known or suspected sex steroid sensitive malignancies. Undiagnosed vag bleeding. Pregnancy.
Special Precautions
Increased risk of breast & liver cancer. Acute or chronic disturbances of liver function. Discontinue if sustained HTN, increase in BP or thrombosis occurs & in case of long-term immobilization due to surgery or illness. Increased incidence of VTE, DVT & pulmonary embolism. Diabetes. Decreased estradiol serum levels. History of galactose intolerance, Lapp lactase deficiency, glucose-galactose malabsorption. Bleeding disturbances eg, oligomenorrhea & amenorrhea, chloasma, ectopic pregnancy may occur. GI disturbances or concomitant medications may decrease the plasma conc of etonogestrel. Changes in vag bleeding pattern. Follicular development.
Adverse Reactions
Altered mood, decreased libido; headache; nausea; acne; breast pain, irregular menstruation, amenorrhea; increased wt.
Drug Interactions
May decrease effectiveness w/ phenytoin, phenobarb, primidone, bosentan, carbamazepine, rifampicin, oxcarbazepine, rifabutin, topiramate, felbamate, griseofulvin, some HIV-PIs (eg, ritonavir, nelfinavir) & NNRTIs (eg, efavirenz) & St. John's wort; medical charcoal. May increase or decrease plasma conc w/ combinations of HIV-PIs (eg, nelfinavir) & NNRTIs (eg, nevirapine), &/or combinations w/ HCV medicinal products (eg, boceprevir, telaprevir). May increase serum conc w/ strong (eg, ketoconazole, itraconazole, clarithromycin) or moderate (eg, fluconazole, diltiazem, erythromycin) CYP3A4 inhibitors. May increase plasma conc of ciclosporine. May decrease plasma conc of lamotrigine. Reduced absorption w/ medical charcoal.
