Contents
Per FC tab Cefuroxime axetil 500 mg, clavulanate K 125 mg. Per 5 mL oral susp Cefuroxime axetil 250 mg, clavulanate K 62.5 mg
Indications/Uses
Bacterial infections eg, bronchitis, sinusitis, tonsillitis, pharyngitis, ear & skin infections, gonorrhea, & UTI.
Dosage/Direction for Use
FC tab Uncomplicated UTI Adult 125 mg bid. Resp tract infections Adult 250-500 mg bid. Childn >3 mth 125 mg bid or 10 mg/kg bid. Max: 250 mg daily. Uncomplicated gonorrhoea Adult 1 g as a single dose + 1 g oral probenecid may be given concurrently. Otitis media Childn >2 yr 250 mg bid or 15 mg/kg bid up to 500 mg daily. Meningitis Adult 3 g every 8 hr. Childn 200-240 mg/kg daily in 3-4 divided doses, may decrease to 100 mg/kg daily after 3 days or once symptoms has improved. Neonate 100 mg/kg daily, may decrease to 50 mg/kg daily when control has been achieved. Renal impairment (CrCl 10-20 mL/min) 750 mg bid, <10 mL/min 750 mg once daily. Patient undergoing haemodialysis Additional 750 mg dose after each dialysis. Patient undergoing continuous peritoneal dialysis 750 mg bid. Oral susp Uncomplicated UTI Childn 10 mg/kg bid. Resp tract infections Childn >3 mth 125 mg bid or 10 mg/kg bid. Max: 250 mg daily. Otitis media Childn >2 yr 250 mg bid or 15 mg/kg bid up to 500 mg daily. Contraindications
Hypersensitivity to cephalosporins.
Special Precautions
Previous hypersensitivity reactions to cephalosporins, penicillins or other drugs. Increased risk of developing drug-resistant bacteria when prescribed in the absence of a proven or strongly suspected bacterial infection or a prophylactic indication. Concurrent treatment w/ potent diuretics. History of colitis. Severe renal impairment. Pregnancy & lactation.
Adverse Reactions
Diarrhea/loose motions, nausea/vomiting, transient elevation in AST, ALT, LDH, eosinophilia. Abdominal pain/cramps, flatulence, indigestion, headache, vaginitis, vulvar itch, hives, itch, dysuria, chills, chest pain, shortness of breath, swollen tongue, sleepiness, anorexia. FC tab: Rash, mouth ulcers, thirst. Oral susp: Dehydration.
Drug Interactions
Increased serum conc w/ probenecid. Lower bioavailability w/ antacids or drugs that reduce gastric acidity. May affect the gut flora leading to lower estrogen reabsorption & reduced efficacy of combined oral estrogen/progesterone.
