Indications/Uses
Treatment of susceptible infections of lower resp tract (pneumonia), skin & skin structure infections, UTI, bacterial septicemia, bone & joint, gynecologic infections (endometritis, pelvic cellulitis & other female genital tract infections), intra-abdominal infections (peritonitis, polymicrobial infections), CNS infections (meningitis).
Dosage/Direction for Use
Adult 1 g IV/IM 8-12 hrly. Uncomplicated UTI 250 mg IV/IM 12 hrly. Bone & joint infections 2 g IV 12 hrly. Complicated UTI 500 mg IV/IM 8-12 hrly. Uncomplicated pneumonia, mild skin & skin structure infections 500 mg-1 g IV/IM 8 hrly. Serious gynecologic & intra-abdominal infections 2 g IV 8 hrly. Meningitis 2 g IV 8 hrly. Very severe life-threatening infections especially in immunocompromised patients 2 g IV 8 hrly. Lung infections caused by Pseudomonas spp in patients w/ cystic fibrosis w/ normal renal function 30-50 mg/kg IV 8 hrly. Max: 6 g/day. Infant & childn 1 mth-12 yr 30-50 mg/kg IV 8 hrly. Max: 6 g/day. Neonate 0-4 wk 30 mg/kg IV 12 hrly.
Contraindications
Hypersensitivity to ceftazidime or to other cephalosporins.
Special Precautions
History of hypersensitivity reactions to cephalosporins & penicillin. Reduce dose in patients w/ renal insufficiency, history of GI disease (colitis). C. difficile-associated diarrhea. Avoid prolonged use. Resistance leading to clinical failure. Monitor prothrombin time in patients w/ renal or hepatic impairment, poor nutritional state & those receiving antimicrobial therapy. History of GI disease particularly colitis. Distal necrosis after intra-arterial administration. Pregnancy & lactation. Elderly.
Adverse Reactions
Phlebitis & inflammation at inj site; pruritus, rash, fever, toxic epidermal necrolysis, Stevens-Johnson syndrome, erythema multiforme; diarrhea, nausea, vomiting, abdominal pain; headache, dizziness & parasthesia.
Drug Interactions
Nephrotoxicity w/ aminoglycosides or potent diuretics (eg, furosemide). Antagonized effects w/ chloramphenicol. Reduced efficacy of combined oral estrogen/progesterone contraceptives. False +ve reaction for glucose in urine using Benedict's or Fehling's soln.
