Clonidine HCl
Indications/Uses
HTN including HTN crisis. Prophylaxis of migraine or recurrent vascular headaches. Menopausal flushing. Cancer pain. Opioid w/drawal, phaechromocytoma. Glaucoma. Tourette's syndrome & other disorders.
Dosage/Direction for Use
Hypertensive crisis 150-300 mcg over 10-15 min slow IV inj. Up to 750 μg may be given IV over 24 hr. Severe HTN Initially 100-200 μg followed by 50-100 μg every hr or max: 500-800 μg. Prophylaxis of migraine or recurrent vascular headaches, menopausal flushing 50 μg by mouth bid, increased 2 wk after remission to 75 μg bid. Severe cancer pain Initially 30 μg/dose by continuous epidural infusion.
Special Precautions
Cerebrovascular disease, ischemic heart disease including MI, renal impairment, occlusive peripheral vascular disorders eg, Raynaud's disease, depression. Rebound HTN may occur in sudden discontinuation. Risk rebound hypotension. Impairment of ability to drive or operate machinery.
Adverse Reactions
Drowsiness, dry mouth, dizziness & headache. Constipation, depression, anxiety, fatigue, nausea, anorexia, parotid pain, sleep disturbances, vivid dreams, impotence & loss of libido, urinary retention or incontinence, slight orthostatic hypotension, dry itching or burning sensations in the eye.
Drug Interactions
Enhanced effects w/ diuretics, other hypertensives & other drugs that cause hypotension. May exacerbate rebound HTN w/ β-blockers; may antagonize hypotensive effect w/ TCA. May enhanced effect w/ CNS depressants.
