Indications/Uses
Management of HTN & angina pectoris. Adjunct to standard therapy in symptomatic heart failure. Reduce mortality in patients w/ left ventricular dysfunction following MI.
Dosage/Direction for Use
25 mg daily. Initially 12.5 mg daily for the 1st 2 days. Thereafter, continue w/ 25 mg daily. May be increased to 25 mg bid after at least 14 days. Max: Single dose of 25 mg daily or a total daily dose of 50 mg.
Administration
Should be taken with food.
Contraindications
Special Precautions
Cirrhosis, asthma, peripheral vascular disease, hyperthyroidism, Prinzmetal's variant angina. Concomitant use w/ diuretics. Elderly.
Adverse Reactions
Dizziness, edema (fluid accumulation), decreased heart rate, diarrhea & postural hypotension. Irregular heart rhythm & visual abnormalities. Reduced lacrimation if using contact lens.
Drug Interactions
May mask early warning signs of hypoglycemia w/ insulin or oral antidiabetic drugs. Irregular heart rhythm or increased BP w/ Ca channel blockers eg, diltiazem or verapamil. Steep decline in BP &/or heart rate w/ reserpine, MAOIs & clonidine. Increased digoxin & cyclosporin blood levels. Decreased blood levels w/ rifampin. Increased blood levels & risk of side effects w/ quinidine, fluoxetine, paroxetine or propafenone.
