Indications/Uses
Ca supplement in deficiency states; adjunct in the management of osteoporosis; antacid; treatment of hyperphosphatemia in patients w/ chronic renal failure or associated secondary hyperparathyroidism.
Dosage/Direction for Use
Up to 1.5 g. Hyperphosphatemia in patients w/ chronic renal failure Initially 2.5 g daily in divided doses, may be increased up to 17 g daily in divided doses as required. Childn 12-18 yr 1.25 g, 6-12 yr 600 mg, 1-6 yr 300 mg. Infant 1 mth-1 yr 120 mg. Doses to be given tid-qid.
Administration
Should be taken with food.
Special Precautions
Hyperkalemia in patients w/ renal impairment or after taking high doses. Alkalosis may occur. Rarely, milk-alkali syndrome & tissue calcification may occur.
Adverse Reactions
Occasionally, constipation. Flatulence. Gastric hypersecretion & acid rebound (w/ high doses or prolonged use).
Drug Interactions
Ca salts alters gastric pH & emptying & formation of complexes.
