Terbutaline sulfate
Indications/Uses
For reversible airways obstruction, in asthma, COPD. Decreases uterine contractility & may be used to arrest premature labor.
Dosage/Direction for Use
Severe forms of bronchospasm 250-500 mcg qid slow IV/IM/SC inj. Adult 3-5 mcg/mL at 0.5-1 mL/min IV infusion rate. Childn >2 yr 10-300 mcg/kg/day slow IV/IM/SC inj.
Contraindications
Patients sensitive to sympathomimetic amines. 1st & 2nd trimester of pregnancy, premature labor associated w/ toxemia of pregnancy or antepartum hemorrhage. Neonates.
Special Precautions
Hyperthyroidism, MI, arrhythmias, susceptibility to QT-interval prolongation, HTN & DM. Severe asthma, hypokalemia. Childn <2 yr.
Adverse Reactions
Fine tremor of skeletal muscle especially hands, palpitations, tachycardia, nervous tension, headache, peripheral vasodilation.
Drug Interactions
Corticosteroid, diuretics or xanthines increase risk of hypokalemia.
