Cefixime trihydrate
Indications/Uses
Susceptible infections including gonorrhea, otitis media, pharyngitis, lower resp tract infections (eg, bronchitis & UTI).
Dosage/Direction for Use
Adult & childn >12 yr 400 mg as single dose or in 2 divided doses. Childn 8 mg/kg/day. Renal impairment CrCl 21-60 mL/min & on hemodialysis 75% of the standard dosage at the standard dosing interval. Patient on continuous ambulatory peritoneal dialysis ½ of the standard dosage at the standard dosing interval.
Administration
May be taken with or without food.
Contraindications
Hypersensitivity to cefixime trihydrate & cephalosporins.
Special Precautions
Hypersensitivity to penicillin. May cause severe antibiotic-associated diarrhea including pseudomembranous colitis. Patients w/ markedly impaired renal function. Patients w/ history of GI disease particularly colitis. False +ve reaction for ketones in the urine w/ tests using nitroprusside; glucose in the urine w/ Benedict's or Fehling's soln or w/ Cu sulfate test caps; Coombs' test. Pregnancy & lactation. Childn <6 mth.
Adverse Reactions
Diarrhea, stool changes. Moderate to severe diarrhea, nausea, abdominal pain, dyspepsia, vomiting & flatulence, pseudomembranous colitis; headache, dizziness; rash, pruritus, urticaria, drug fever, arthralgia; thrombocytopenia, leucopenia & eosinophilia, mild transient changes in liver & renal function tests; genital pruritus & vaginitis.
Drug Interactions
May increase prothrombin time w/ anticoagulants.
