Betamethasone 250 mcg, dexchlorpheniramine maleate 2 mg
Indications/Uses
Relief of difficult cases of resp, ocular & dermatologic allergies, as well as ocular inflammatory disorders where adjunctive systemic corticosteroid therapy is indicated.
Dosage/Direction for Use
Individualized dose. Adult & childn ≥12 yr 1-2 tab qid.
Administration
Should be taken with food.
Contraindications
Hypersensitivity. Systemic fungal infections; MAOIs.
Special Precautions
Do not take if patient has breathing problem eg, emphysema or chronic bronchitis, glaucoma, difficulty in urination due to enlargement of the prostate gland. Kaposi's sarcoma. Patients w/ CHF, HTN or renal insufficiency. Drug-induced secondary adrenocortical insufficiency. Avoid use w/ alcohol, sedatives & tranquilizers. May affect ability to drive or operate machinery. Pregnancy & lactation.
Adverse Reactions
Betamethasone: Fluid & electrolyte disturbances, GI, dermatologic, neurologic, endocrine, ophth, metabolic & psychiatric. Dexchlorpheniramine: Slight to moderate drowsiness. Sedation, sleepiness, dizziness, disturbed coordination, epigastric distress, rash, dry mouth & thickening of bronchial secretions.
Drug Interactions
Betamethasone: Reduced effects w/ phenobarb, phenytoin, rifampicin or ephedrine. Excessive corticosteroid effects w/ estrogen. May enhance hypokalemia w/ K-depleting diuretics & arrhythmias or digitalis toxicity w/ cardiac glycosides. May enhance K depletion caused by amphotericin B. May increase or decrease anticoagulant effects w/ coumarin-type anticoagulants. May increase occurrence or severity of GI ulceration w/ NSAIDs or alcohol. Dexchlorpheniramine maleate: Prolonged or intensified effect w/ MAOIs. May potentiate sedative effect w/ alcohol, TCAs, barbiturates or other CNS depressants. May inhibit action of oral anticoagulants.
