Aspirin
Indications/Uses
Initial treatment of CV disorders eg, angina pectoris & MI. Prevention of cerebrovascular disorders eg, stroke.
Dosage/Direction for Use
Prevention of MI & stroke 75-100 mg daily.
Administration
Should be taken with food.
Special Precautions
Patients prone to dyspepsia or known to have lesion of gastric mucosa; w/ hemophilia or other hemorrhagic disorders, gout, aspirin intolerance (especially aspirin-sensitive asthmatics). Renal or hepatic impairment. Not to be taken during lactation. Childn <12 yr.
Adverse Reactions
GI disturbances eg, nausea, dyspepsia & vomiting. Urticaria & other skin eruptions, angioedema, rhinitis & severe/fatal paroxysmal bronchospasm & dyspnea. Increased bleeding time, decreased platelet adhesiveness & hypoprothrombinemia (large dose). May exhibit cross-sensitivity to other NSAIDs. Symptoms of salicylism eg, dizziness, tinnitus, deafness, sweating, nausea & vomiting, headache & mental confusion; Reye's syndrome (childn).
Drug Interactions
Enhanced effects on GIT w/ alcohol. May enhance activity of coumarin anticoagulants, sulphonylurea, hypoglycemic agents, methotrexate, phenytoin & valproic acid. Diminished effects of uricosurics eg, probenecid & sulphinpyrazone.
