Indications/Uses
Tab: Treatment of infections of the upper & lower resp tract, skin & soft tissues & infections of the genitals due to Chlamydia trachomatis. Susp: Infections due to resp pathogens eg, S. pyogenes, S. pneumoniae, M. catarrhalis, C. trachomatis, Legionella sp, Mycoplasma pneumoniae, S. aureus & H. influenzae; C. pneumoniae & M. avium infection; uncomplicated chlamydial urethritis, cervicitis or pharyngitis. Alternative drug for multi-drug resistant Salmonella typhi infection outside CNS.
Dosage/Direction for Use
Tab Infections of the genitals Adult 1,000 mg as single dose. Other infections Adult, childn & infant >45 kg 1,500 mg in a 3- or 5-day regimen. 3-day regimen: 500 mg/day. 5-day regimen: 500 mg as a single dose on the 1st day, followed by 250 mg once daily on days 2-5. Susp Adult & elderly Uncomplicated C. trachomatis urethritis & cervicitis 1,000 mg as single dose. Other infections 1,500 mg in a 3- or 5-day regimen. 3-day regimen: 500 mg/day. 5-day regimen: 500 mg on the 1st day, followed by 250 mg once daily on days 2-5. Childn ≥1 yr Total dose: 30 mg/kg in a 3- or 5-day regimen. 3-day regimen: 10 mg/kg once daily. 5-day regimen: 10 mg/kg as single dose on the 1st day, followed by 5 mg/kg on days 2-5. Pharyngitis caused by S. pyogenes 10 or 20 mg/kg as single dose for 3 days. Max: 500 mg/day.
Administration
May be taken with or without food: May be taken w/ meals to reduce GI discomfort.
Contraindications
Hypersensitivity to azithromycin, erythromycin, any macrolide or ketolide antibiotic.
Special Precautions
Hepatoxicity, infantile hypertrophic pyloric stenosis (IHPS), pseudomembranous colitis, ergot derivatives, superinfections, cross resistance, serious infections, Clostridium difficile associated diarrhoea, renal impairment, CV events, myasthenia gravis, paediatric population, long-term use & neurological & psychiatric disorders.
Adverse Reactions
GI problems. Hypersensitivity reactions, impaired liver function including hepatitis, jaundice, hepatic necrosis & hepatic failure; inflammation of the kidneys & acute renal failure, palpitations, chest pains & irregular heartbeat; dizziness, vertigo, cramps, headaches, drowsiness & weakness, hyperacidity, agitation, anxiety, nervousness, impaired sensation & hearing.
Drug Interactions
Antacids, cetirizine, didanosine, digoxin & colchicine, ergot derivatives, zidovudine, atorvastatin, carbamazepine, cimetidine, coumarin-type oral anticoagulants, ciclosporin, efavirenz, fluconazole, indinavir, methylprednisolone, midazolam, nelfinavir, rifabutin, sildenafil, terfenadine, theophylline, triazolam, trimethoprim/sulfamethoxazole, other antibiotics & medicinal products known to prolong the QT interval.
