Aspirin
Indications/Uses
Prophylaxis of cerebrovascular disease or MI or for the secondary prevention of thrombotic cerebrovascular or CV disease. Pain in musculoskeletal conditions, headache, dysmenorrhea, pyrexia & fever.
Dosage/Direction for Use
Analgesic/antipyretic 300-900 mg every 4-6 hr. Max of 4 g/day. Prevention of MI & stroke 75-100 mg.
Administration
Should be taken with food: Take immediately after meals. Swallow whole, do not chew/crush.
Contraindications
Hypersensitivity to aspirin & other NSAIDs. History or active peptic ulcer. Hemophilia, gout. Childn, adolescents <16 yr & lactation (risk of Reye's syndrome).
Special Precautions
Patients susceptible to dyspepsia or w/ gastric mucosal lesion.
Adverse Reactions
Nausea, dyspepsia, vomiting; urticaria & other skin eruptions, angioedema, rhinitis, severe or even fatal paroxysmal bronchospasm & dyspnea especially w/ asthma, chronic urticaria or chronic rhinitis. Increased bleeding time, decreased platelet adhesiveness & in large doses, hypoprothrombinemia; salicylism. Reye's syndrome (in childn).
Drug Interactions
Enhanced effect on the GIT w/ alcohol. Enhanced activity of coumarin anticoagulants, sulfonylureas, hypoglycemic agents, methotrexate, phenytoin & valproic acid. Diminished effects of uricosurics eg, probenecid & sulfinpyrazone.
