Indications/Uses
Symptomatic treatment of parkinsonism including the alleviation of extrapyramidal syndrome induced by drugs eg, phenothiazines.
Dosage/Direction for Use
Initially 1 mg bid, may be gradually increased over several days according to the needs of the patient. Usual optimum maintenance dose: 3-12 mg daily in divided doses. Idiopathic parkinsonism Initially 2 mg tid-qid. Max: 16 mg in 24 hr. Drug-induced extrapyramidal symptoms 2 mg once daily-tid.
Administration
Should be taken with food.
Contraindications
Special Precautions
Pregnancy & lactation.
Adverse Reactions
Choreic movements (when in concomitant use w/ carbidopa/levodopa); sleep disorder [decreased rapid eye movement (REM) sleep & increased REM latency], drowsiness, euphoria or disorientation, agitation; disturbed behavior (at high doses); blurred vision; dry mouth, constipation; decreased urinary flow; postural hypotension, bradycardia.
Drug Interactions
Can potentiate CNS & peripheral side effects w/ other anticholinergic psychotropic drugs, antihistamines, antiparkinsonian drugs & antispasmodics. May potentiate anticholinergic effects w/ quinidine. May potentiate dyskinesia w/ levodopa. Generalised choreic movements in Parkinson's disease w/ carbidopa/levidopa. May attenuate effects of metoclopramide. Avoid alcohol consumption.
