Acetylcysteine
Indications/Uses
Secretolytic therapy in acute & chronic bronchopulmonary diseases accompanied by impaired formation & transport of mucus.
Dosage/Direction for Use
Adult & adolescent from 14 yr ½ effervescent tab bid or 1 effervescent tab once daily (equiv to 600 mg/day). Duration of use: Should not be taken for >4-5 days.
Administration
Should be taken with food: Dissolve tab in a glass of water.
Contraindications
Hypersensitivity. Active peptic ulceration. Childn <14 yr.
Special Precautions
Closely monitor during therapy in patients w/ bronchial asthma. Discontinue immediately if bronchospasm occurs; cutaneous & mucosal changes newly occur. Patients w/ history of ulcers, particularly if additional drugs that are known to irritate the mucous membranes of the GI tract are being taken. Perform appropriate measures (eg, drainage & aspiration) if the patient is unable to sufficiently expectorate. Avoid treatment for longer periods in patients w/ histamine intolerance. Pregnancy & lactation. Not to be used in childn <2 yr.
Adverse Reactions
Very rarely, severe skin reactions eg, SJS & TEN.
Drug Interactions
May cause a dangerous secretory congestion due to reduced cough reflex when combined w/ antitussives. Inactivation of oral antibiotics (except for cefixime & loracarbef). Intensification of the vasodilatory & inhibitions of platelet aggregation effects of glyceryl trinitrate (nitroglycerine). Reduced effectiveness w/ activated carbon in high doses (as an antidote). May affect the colorimetric determination of salicylates. May affect the results of determinations of ketone bodies in urine tests. Dissolution w/ other medicinal products is not recommended.
