Anxiety disorders & transient symptoms of anxiety Initially, 250-500 mcg tid, may be increased at intervals of 3-4 days. Max: 4 mg daily given in divided doses. Panic disorder Initially, 500 mcg tid, may be increased at intervals of 3-4 days in increments of not >1 mg/day. Max: 4 mg daily given in divided doses. Elderly, patient w/ advanced liver disease or w/ debilitating disease 250 mcg bid or tid.

Administration
May be taken with or without food: Take w/ food if GI distress occurs.
Contraindications
Hypersensitivity to alprazolam or other benzodiazepines. Patients w/ acute narrow-angle glaucoma. Concomitant use w/ ketoconazole & itraconazole. Severe hepatic impairment.
Avoid in patients w/ preexisting CNS depression or coma, resp depression, acute pulmonary insufficiency, myasthenia gravis, sleep apnea. Patients w/ muscle weakness, or w/ hepatic or renal impairment; chronic pulmonary insufficiency; w/ personality disorders; w/ organic brain changes particularly arteriosclerosis. Not appropriate for the treatment of chronic psychosis, phobic or obsessional states; should not be used alone to treat depression or anxiety associated w/ depression. History of alcohol or drug addiction. Monitor cardioresp function when used for deep sedation. Contains tartrazine which may cause allergic-type reaction (including bronchial asthma). May impair ability to drive or operate machinery. Women of childbearing potential. Pregnancy (avoid during 1st trimester) & lactation. Elderly or debilitated patients.
