Indications/Uses
Treatment of gout either primary or secondary to the hyperuricemia associated w/ blood dyscrasias & their therapy. Primary or secondary uric acid nephropathy; recurrent uric acid stone formation.
Dosage/Direction for Use
Adult Mild gout 100-200 mg/day. Moderately severe gout 300-600 mg/day. Severe hyperuricemia Up to 900 mg/day. Maintenance dose: 200-600 mg/day, up to 300 mg as single daily dose. Hyperuricemia & prevention of uric acid nephropathy associated w/ cancer therapy 600-800 mg/day in divided doses for 2-3 days. Childn 10-20 mg/kg body wt/day.
Administration
Should be taken with food.
Contraindications
Childn except those w/ hyperuricemia secondary to malignancy. Pregnancy & lactation. Idiopathic hemochromatosis.
Special Precautions
Adverse Reactions
Skin rash; exfoliative rashes, Stevens-Johnson syndrome, toxic epidermal necrolysis may occur. Fever, chills, leukopenia or leukocytosis, eosinophilia, arthralgia & vasculitis. GI disturbances, peripheral neuritis, alopecia, headache, drowsiness & vertigo.
Drug Interactions
Azathioprine & mercaptopurine. Thiazide diuretics. Captopril, theophylline & vidarabine.
