Dosage/Direction for Use

Adult Initially 250 mg bid or tid for 1st 48 hr adjusted thereafter. Max: 3 g daily. Childn Initially 10 mg/kg daily in 2-4 doses. Max: 65 mg/kg or 3 g daily, whichever is less.

Overdosage

Administration

May be taken with or without food.

Contraindications

Hypersensitivity. Active hepatic disease, pheochromocytoma. Concomitant therapy w/ MAOIs.

Special Precautions

History of liver disease. Coombs' test. Discontinue therapy if unexplained persistent fever, liver dysfunction, jaundice, hemolytic anemia occur. Crosses placental barrier & appears in breast milk.

Adverse Reactions

Sedation (usually transient), headache, asthenia or weakness. CNS, CVS, hepatic effects, GI disturbances, allergic, hematologic & dermatologic reactions. Nasal stuffiness, rise in BUN, breast enlargement, gynecomastia, lactation, hyperprolactinemia, amenorrhea, impotence, decreased libido, mild arthralgia, joint swelling, myalgia.

Drug Interactions

Lithium, antihypertensive drugs, Fe, MAOI.
