Indications/Uses
Plasma vol replacement & to restore colloid osmotic pressure; in conditions eg, burns, severe acute albumin loss & acute hypovolemic shock; as an exchange fluid in therapeutic plasmapheresis; in neonatal hyperbilirubinemia (concentrated albumin soln).
Dosage/Direction for Use
Acute hypovolemic shock Adult Initially 25 g. Childn Initially 1 g/kg. Hypoproteinemia Max: 2 g/kg daily. Hyperbilirubinemia Neonate 1 g/kg before exchange transfusion.
Contraindications
Hypersensitivity. Patients w/ severe anemia or cardiac failure in the presence of normal or increased intravascular vol.
Special Precautions
Patients w/ low cardiac reserve. Ensure adequate fluid intake. Closely monitor for signs of increased venous pressure. Pregnancy.
Adverse Reactions
Allergic or pyrogenic reactions (fever & chills); rash, nausea, vomiting, tachycardia, hypotension, increased salivation. May result in vascular overload w/ resultant pulmonary edema.
