Contents
Glimepiride
Dosage/Direction for Use
Starting dose: 1-2 mg daily, increased gradually by 1-2 mg daily at intervals of 1-2 wk. Maintenance dose: 1-4 mg/day. Max dose: 8 mg daily.
Administration
Should be taken with food: Take after the 1st main meal of the day. Do not skip meals.
Contraindications
Hypersensitivity. Impaired renal function. Not for the treatment of insulin-dependent DM. Ketoacidosis (w/ or w/o coma) & severe infection, trauma & other severe conditions. Pregnancy & lactation.
Adverse Reactions
Hypoglycemia. Dizziness, asthenia, headache; nausea, vomiting, GI pain & diarrhea, allergic reactions w/ skin rashes & pruritus, hyponatremia; leukopenia, agranulocytosis, thrombocytopenia, hemolytic anemia, aplastic anemia, pancytopenia.
Drug Interactions
May potentiate blood glucose-lowering effect w/ oral antidiabetics, insulin, ACE inhibitors, coumarin derivatives, quinolones, sulfonamides, tetracyclines, chloramphenicol, MAOIs, cyclophosphamide, fibrates, guanethidine, high dose pentoxifylline, salicylates, phenylbutazone, sulfinpyrazone & probenecid. May weaken blood glucose-lowering action w/ acetazolamide, corticosteroids, estrogens, progesterone, barbiturates, diuretics, epinephrine & other sympathomimetics, high dose of nicotinic acid, phenothiazines & phenytoin. May either potentiate or weaken the effect w/ alcohol, β-blockers, H2-receptor antagonists, clonidine & reserpine.
