Sulfinpyrazone is used to reduce the high level of uric acid in your body.
Build-up of uric acid in your body can cause gout, gouty arthritis, kidney or urinary tract stones. This medicine is used to prevent or treat these conditions.
High uric acid levels may also occur in people who take a type of medicine called a diuretic or a "water pill". Sulfinpyrazone may also be prescribed in this instance.
Take Sulfinpyrazone exactly as directed by your doctor or according to the instructions on the label. Do not take more or less than instructed by your doctor.
This medicine should be taken together with food or immediately after a meal. Try to take it at the same time each day.
You may need to take Sulfinpyrazone for some time before the full benefits can be felt. Continue to take this medicine even when you feel better and do not stop taking unless advised by your doctor to do so.
Take the missed dose as soon as your remember. If it is almost time for your next dose, skip the missed dose and return to your normal dosing schedule.
DO NOT double a dose under any circumstances.
If you often forget to take your medicine, let your doctor and pharmacist know.
Alert your doctor if you have:
- stomach ulcer or history of stomach ulcer
- kidney disease or history of kidney disease
- liver disease or history of liver disease
- blood disorder
- porphyria (an inherited disorder that may cause skin or nerve problems)
as Sulfinpyrazone may not be suitable for you.
Do not take Sulfinpyrazone with aspirin (medicine for pain and inflammation).
Let your doctor know if you are pregnant or breastfeeding.
For as long as you are taking Sulfinpyrazone, you will need to have regular blood tests to make sure that your liver function is normal. Your doctor will advise you about how often you need to have the blood test. It is important that you keep all appointments with your doctor.
Sulfinpyrazone may cause any of the following side effects: stomach pain discomfort, nausea, rashes, vomiting and diarrhea.
Some side effects may need immediate medical help. Alert your doctor quickly if you experience any of the following:
- yellowing of the skin, eyes, pain near the stomach area
- vomiting coffee ground like substance and passing out black stool
- fever with persistent sore throat or mouth ulcers, unusual bleeding or bruising
Inform your doctor if any of these side effects do not go away or are severe, or if you experience other side effects.
Do not take Sulfinpyrazone with aspirin (medicine for pain and inflammation).
Inform your doctor and pharmacist if you are taking any of these medicines:
- warfarin (blood-thinning medicine)
- medicine for diabetes e.g. glipizide
- medicine for epilepsy(seizures or fits) e.g. carbamazepine, phenytoin
- theophylline (medicine for asthma)
- certain antibiotics e.g. penicillin, nitrofurantoin
This list does not include all medicines that may interact with Sulfinpyrazone.
This medicine should not be taken at the same time as colestyramine. Colestyramine could reduce the effectiveness of this medicine when taken at the same time. If you are taking colestyramine, take this medicine at least 4 hours after you have taken colestyramine.
Always notify your doctor and pharmacist if you are taking any other medicines, including herbal tonics such as traditional Chinese medicines, supplements and medicines that you buy without a prescription.
Avoid alcohol.
Store in a cool dry place away from the reach of children.
Medicines must not be used past the expiry date.
