Sulfadiazine is used to treat bacterial infections.
This medicine may be used as an alternative to penicillin in preventing rheumatic fever.
Sulfadiazine may be used to treat other conditions as decided by your doctor.
Take Sulfadiazine exactly as directed by your doctor or according to the instructions on the label. Do not take more or less than instructed by your doctor.
Take this medicine with one full glass of water. Sulfadiazine should be taken at regular intervals for it to be effective. Continue taking this medicine even when you feel better. Do not stop taking it unless instructed by the doctor.
Do not skip any doses. You must complete the entire course of antibiotic. If you don't, the infection will not clear completely.
Take the missed dose as soon as you remember. If it is almost time for your next dose, skip the missed dose and return to your normal dosing schedule.
DO NOT double a dose under any circumstances.
If you often forget to take your medicine, let your doctor and pharmacist know.
Do not take Sulfadiazine if you have a history of allergic reactions (swollen eyes or mouth, difficulty breathing, rashes) to this medicine.
Do not give this medicine to infants under 2 months old unless instructed to do so by the doctor.
Inform your doctor if you have the following conditions:
- kidney disease
- liver disease
- allergy
- asthma
- G6PD deficiency (an inherited blood disorder that affects the red blood cell)
Let your doctor know if you are pregnant or breastfeeding.
For as long as you are taking this medicine, blood tests and urinalysis must be done regularly to check your body's response to the medicine. Your doctor will advise you how often you need to have them.
Sulfadiazine may cause any of the following side effects: headache, depression, hallucination, abdominal pain, diarrhoea, nausea, vomiting and tinnitus (ringing in the ears).
Some side effects may need immediate help. Alert your doctor quickly if you experience rashes with peeling of the skin or blistering of the lips, mouth or eyes accompanied by fever and yellowing of the skin or eyes.
You will need to increase fluid intake to reduce the risk of crystalluria (presence of crystals in the urine).
Inform your doctor if any of these side effects do not go away or are severe, or if you experience other side effects.
Inform your doctor and pharmacist if you are taking any of these medicines:
- antibiotics e.g. trimethoprim
- medicines for malaria e.g. pyrimethamine
- medicines for blood-thinning e.g. aspirin, warfarin
- medicines for diabetes e.g. chlorpropamide, tolbutamide
- medicines for cancer e.g. methotrexate
- medicines for gout e.g. probenecid
- medicines for inducing insensitivity to pain e.g. benzocaine, prilocaine, tetracaine
- medicines for epilepsy (fits or seizures) e.g. phenytoin
This list does not include all medicines that may interact with Sulfadiazine.
Always notify your doctor and pharmacist if you are taking any other medicines, including herbal tonics such as traditional Chinese medicines, supplements and medicines that you buy without a prescription.
Avoid alcohol.
Avoid excessive consumption of cranberry juice and vitamin C rich foods.
Store in a cool, dry place away from the reach of children.
Medicines must not be used past the expiry date.
