Why do I need this medicine?
Risdiplam is used to treat spinal muscular atrophy (disease that causes muscle weakness and wasting due to a shortage of a protein called survival motor neuron [SMN] protein in the body) in infants, children, and adults.

This medicine helps the body produce more SMN protein which would improve muscle function.
How do I take this medicine?
Take Risdiplam exactly as directed by your doctor or according to the instructions on the label. Do not take more or less than instructed by your doctor.

Take it immediately after a meal. Try to take it at the same time each day.

Risdiplam is available as an oral solution, shake the bottle well before you take it to ensure that the liquid is evenly mixed. Use the measuring device provided to measure your dose.

Do not store this medicine in the measuring device. Take your dose within 5 minutes; if not taken within 5 minutes, prepare a new dose.

If Risdiplam is being given to an infant, give this medicine after breast-feeding. Do not mix this medicine with milk or formula milk.

To make sure the medicine is completely swallowed, drink water after you or your child takes it.

If you cannot swallow or if you are on nasogastric feeding, you may be given this medicine as instructed. Always flush the tubing with water after each dose of this medicine to ensure that the full dose is taken.

The dose of this medicine for an infant or child will be determined by your doctor based on their weight. Inform your doctor if their weight has changed. The dose of the medicine may need to be adjusted.

Risdiplam must be taken regularly for it to be effective. Continue taking this medicine even when you feel better. Do not stop taking it unless instructed by the doctor.
What should I do if I have forgotten to take this medicine?
If you miss a dose and it is less than 6 hours before the next dose is due, take the missed dose and return to your normal dosing schedule.

If it is more than 6 hours before the next dose is due, skip the missed dose and return to your normal dosing schedule.

DO NOT double a dose under any circumstances.

If you often forget to take your medicine, let your doctor and pharmacist know.
When should I not use this medicine?
Do not take Risdiplam if you ever had an allergic reaction (e.g. rashes, breathlessness, swollen eyes) to this medicine or any of its ingredients.
What should I take note of while taking this medicine?
Let your doctor know if you are pregnant or breastfeeding.

If you become pregnant while on Risdiplam therapy, alert your doctor immediately. This medicine may cause harm to your unborn child. You must use proven birth control methods during Risdiplam therapy and for 1 month after stopping the treatment.

Risdiplam may possibly affect male fertility. You must use proven birth control methods while taking this medicine. Adequate contraceptive methods must be used during therapy and for 4 months after stopping the treatment. You may wish to discuss birth control methods with your doctor.

Be sure to check with your doctor or pharmacist before giving this medicine to a child. Children may be more sensitive to the side effects.

Do not inhale nor let the powder or solution to be in contact with your eyes or skin.

Wear gloves when handling the powder or solution. Do not touch it with your bare hands. Do not reuse the gloves.

If you accidentally spill the powder or solution, wipe it immediately with a damp disposable towel. Place the towel in a plastic bag and throw it away immediately. Wash your hands thoroughly after.

Why is it important to keep my appointments with the doctor?

Keep your appointments with your doctor. Your doctor needs to monitor your condition and check your response to the medication regularly.
  • Pregnancy tests must be done before, during, and after treatment to know if this medicine is suited for you to take.
  • Regular monitoring of breathing and hydration status in infants and children may also be needed.
What side effects could I experience?
This medicine may cause any of the following side effects: nausea, vomiting, diarrhoea, constipation, mouth sores, headache, joint pain, rash, and fever.

Inform your doctor if any of these side effects do not go away or are severe, or if you experience other side effects.
Can I take this with other medicines?
Inform your doctor and pharmacist if you are taking any of these medicines:
  • midazolam (medicine for sleep disorder)
  • metformin (medicine for diabetes)
  • fexofenadine (medicine for cold or allergy)
This list does not include all medicines that may interact with Risdiplam.

Always notify your doctor and pharmacist if you are taking any other medicines, including herbal tonics such as traditional Chinese medicines, supplements and medicines that you buy without a prescription.
What special dietary instructions should I follow?
Avoid alcohol.
How should I store this medicine?
Store the oral solution in the refrigerator, between 2-8 °C. Do not allow to freeze. If frozen, this medicine will become ineffective and should not be used.

Protect from light.

The oral solution should be used within 64 days after reconstitution.
