Prasterone is used to treat moderate to severe vaginal symptoms such as dryness or irritation in postmenopausal women.
Use Prasterone exactly as directed by your doctor or according to the instructions on the label. Do not use more or less than instructed by your doctor.
It is best to use it at bedtime. Try to use it at the same time each day.
Prasterone is available as a pessary.
To use this medicine, follow these steps:
- Wash your hands thoroughly.
- Remove the wrapper from the pessary (and the applicator, if this is given).
- If an applicator is supplied, activate it by pulling back the plunger then fix the pessary into the hole at the end of the applicator.
- Lie on your back with both knees bent and legs apart.
- Using the applicator or your finger, gently insert the pessary into the vagina. Insert the pessary only as far as it can comfortably go. Do not use force.
- If you are using the applicator, press the plunger to release the pessary then remove the applicator from your vagina.
- Wash your hands and the applicator thoroughly after use.
- Keep the applicator clean until the next use and throw it away after 1 week of usage.
Insert the missed dose as soon as you remember. However, if it is less than 8 hours before the next dose is due, skip the missed dose and return to your normal dosing schedule.
DO NOT double a dose to make up for a missed dose.
If you often forget to use your medicine, let your doctor and pharmacist know.
Alert your doctor if you have the following conditions:
- unexplained vaginal bleeding
- untreated endometrial hyperplasia (excessive thickening of the womb lining)
- history of known or suspected sex hormone-sensitive cancers e.g. breast or endometrial cancer
- current or history of liver disease
- current or history of blood clot disorders
- disease caused by blood clots in the arteries e.g. heart attack, chest pain
- porphyria (an inherited disorder that causes skin or nervous system abnormalities)
as Prasterone may not be suitable for you.
Inform your doctor if you have the following conditions:
- endometriosis (abnormal growth of tissues outside the womb)
- fibroids (non-cancerous growths of muscle and tissue in or around the womb)
- history of endometrial hyperplasia (excessive thickening of the womb lining)
- family history of breast cancer
- high blood pressure
- diabetes
- systemic lupus erythematosus (an autoimmune disease that causes inflammation)
- migraine (severe throbbing or pulsating sensation usually affecting one side of the head that is often accompanied by nausea, vomiting, and sensitivity to light and sound) or severe headache
- liver tumour
- gallstones (abnormal stone-like mass formation in the gall bladder)
- fits or seizures
- asthma
- otosclerosis (abnormal hardening or growth of a bone in the ear)
This medicine is only indicated for women who have undergone menopause.
If you are going to have certain laboratory tests (e.g. Pap smear), inform your doctor that you are using Prasterone.
Why is it important to keep my appointments with the doctor?
Keep your appointments with your doctor. Your doctor needs to monitor your condition and check your response to the medication regularly.
- Your doctor may perform a physical examination including breast and pelvic examinations before and during treatment to know if this medicine is suited for you to use.
- Regular monitoring of signs and symptoms of excessive bleeding or vaginal discharge may also be needed.
Prasterone may cause any of the following side effects: vaginal discharge or weight changes.
Inform your doctor if any of these side effects do not go away or are severe, or if you experience other side effects.
Always notify your doctor and pharmacist if you are taking or using any other medicines, including herbal tonics such as traditional Chinese medicines, supplements and medicines that you buy without a prescription.
Store in a cool, dry place away from the reach of children.
Medicines must not be used past the expiry date.
