Phenoxymethylpenicillin is an antibiotic. It is used to treat certain bacterial infections of the ear, nose, throat, lungs or skin.
This medicine may also be used to prevent rheumatic fever (fever manifested by inflammation and pain in the joints).
Take Phenoxymethylpenicillin exactly as directed by your doctor or according to the instructions on the label. Do not take more or less than instructed by your doctor.
This medicine should be taken on an empty stomach, at least 1 hour before or 2 hours after a meal.
Phenoxymethylpenicillin is available as an oral tablet or oral suspension.
If you are taking an oral suspension, shake the bottle well before you take it to ensure that the liquid is evenly mixed. Use the measuring spoon or cup provided to measure out your prescribed dose.
Take this medicine at regular intervals. Complete the entire course of medicine.
Take the missed dose as soon as you remember. If it is almost time for your next dose, skip the missed dose and return to your normal dosing schedule.
DO NOT double a dose under any circumstances.
If you often forget to take your medicine, let your doctor and pharmacist know.
Do not take this medicine if you ever had an allergic reaction (rashes, breathlessness, swollen mouth or eyes) to penicillin or any cephalosporin antibiotics.
Inform your doctor if you have the following conditions:
- kidney disease
- epilepsy (fits or seizures)
- asthma
Let your doctor know if you are pregnant or breastfeeding.
Keep your appointments with your doctor. Your doctor needs to monitor your condition and check your response to the medication regularly.
- Your allergy history, culture and sensitivity tests will be assessed prior starting therapy.
- Your doctor may need to do routine blood and kidney function tests while you are being treated with this medicine.
Phenoxymethylpenicillin may cause any of the following side effects: diarrhoea, nausea, vomiting, blackened tongue and oral thrush (mouth infection).
If you develop rashes, breathlessness, swollen mouth or eyes, stop taking the medicine and inform your doctor quickly. These could be signs of an allergic reaction.
Inform your doctor if any of these side effects do not go away or are severe, or if you experience other side effects.
Inform your doctor and pharmacist if you are taking any of these medicines:
- other antibiotics e.g. doxycycline, erythromycin, chloramphenicol, sulfasalazine
- medicines for gout e.g. probenecid
- medicines to treat cancer e.g. methotrexate
- blood-thinning medicine e.g. warfarin
Inform your doctor if you are currently taking birth-control pills that contain oestrogen, as this can reduce the effectiveness of Phenoxymethylpenicillin. You should not stop or start any birth control pills without first informing your doctor. Ask your doctor about using non-hormonal birth control as an alternative while being treated with this medicine.
Always notify your doctor and pharmacist if you are taking any other medicines, including herbal tonics such as traditional Chinese medicines, supplements and medicines that you buy without a prescription.
Avoid alcohol.
Store in a cool, dry place away from the reach of children.
Store oral suspension in the refrigerator, (between 2-8°C). Do not allow to freeze. If frozen, this medicine will become ineffective and should not be used. Throw away any unused portion 14 days after opening.
Medicines must not be used past the expiry date.
