Olsalazine is used to treat ulcerative proctitis. This disease causes inflammation in the lower part of the colon (large intestine) and the rectum.
Take Olsalazine exactly as directed by your doctor or according to the instructions on the label. Do not take more or less than instructed by your doctor.
Take this medicine together with food or immediately after a meal. Try to take it at the same time each day.
Olsalazine must be taken regularly for it to be effective. Continue taking this medicine even when you feel better. Do not stop taking Olsalazine unless instructed by the doctor.
Take the missed dose as soon as you remember. If it is almost time for your next dose, skip the missed dose and return to your normal dosing schedule.
DO NOT double a dose under any circumstances.
If you often forget to take your medicine, let your doctor and pharmacist know.
Alert your doctor if you are allergic to medicines similar to Olsalazine, such as salicylates (e.g. aspirin) as Olsalazine may not be suitable for you.
Inform your doctor if you have the following conditions:
- kidney disease
- liver disease
- blood disorders
- asthma
Let your doctor know if you are pregnant or breastfeeding.
You may need to have regular blood tests to make sure that your blood counts and kidney function are normal while you are being treated with Olsalazine. Your doctor will advise you about how often you need to have these blood tests.
Olsalazine may cause any of the following side effects: diarrhoea, stomach cramps, nausea, vomiting, stomach wind, indigestion, loss of appetite, muscle pain, joint pain, headache, rashes, difficulty sleeping (insomnia).
Some side effects may be serious, although they are not common. Inform your doctor immediately if you experience:
- rash
- persistent diarrhoea and abdominal pain or cramps
- unusual bruising or bleeding
- yellowing of the skin or whites of the eyes
- chest pain or difficulty breathing
Inform your doctor if any of these side effects do not go away or are severe, or if you experience other side effects.
Inform your doctor and pharmacist if you are taking any other medicines:
- blood-thinning medicines e.g. warfarin
- medicines used in organ transplant or certain immune disorders e.g. azathioprine, mercaptopurine, thioguanine
This list does not include all medicines that may interact with Olsalazine.
Always notify your doctor and pharmacist if you are taking any other medicines, including herbal tonics such as traditional Chinese medicine, supplements and medicines that you buy without a prescription.
Avoid alcohol.
Store in a cool, dry place away from the reach of children.
Medicines must not be used past the expiry date.
