Ofloxacin is used to treat external ear canal infection and middle ear infection caused by bacteria.
Use Ofloxacin exactly as directed by your doctor or according to the instructions on the label. Do not use more or less than instructed by your doctor.
How to use this medicine:
- Wash your hand with soap and water before using the ear drops. Ensure that your ear canal is clean and dry.
- Keep the ear drop bottle in the palm of your hands (to warm the bottle) for a few minutes to avoid unpleasant contact of the cold solution in the ear.
- Lie down or tilt your head to one side.
- Gently pull and hold your ear up and back. Instill the required number of drops into your ear.
- Keep your head tilted for 5 minutes. Repeat in the other ear if necessary.
- Replace and tighten the cap of the bottle.
Avoid contact of the tip of the bottle or dropper with fingers or ears to limit the risk of contamination.
Avoid any contact of the solution to clothing, it can leave stains on the fabric.
Do not share this medicine with anyone else.
Use the missed dose as soon as you remember. If it is almost time for your next dose, skip the missed dose and return to your normal dosing schedule.
DO NOT double a dose to make up for a missed dose.
Do not use this medicine if you ever had an allergic reaction (rashes, breathlessness, swollen eyes) to Ofloxacin and similar medicines such as ciprofloxacin, levofloxacin, lomefloxacin, nalidixic acid, norfloxacin, and moxifloxacin.
Let your doctor know if you are pregnant or breastfeeding.
If you are using Ofloxacin ear drops for 10 days or more, you may need to have your ear(s) checked. Your doctor will advise you if you need this re-evaluation.
Ofloxacin may cause any of the following side effects: ear discomfort after application, itching, pain, irritation and taste disturbances.
Some side effects may need immediate medical help. Alert your doctor quickly if you experience any of the following:
- rashes, breathlessness and swelling of the eyes, mouth, tongue, throat
- pain, tenderness, and mild swelling in limbs or joints
- ruptured tendon usually characterized by a snap or pop you hear or feel, severe pain, bruising, and marked weakness on the affected area e.g. kneecap, shoulders, heel
Inform your doctor if any of these side effects do not go away or are severe, or if you experience other side effects.
Always notify your doctor and pharmacist if you are taking any other medicines, including herbal tonics such as traditional Chinese medicines, supplements and medicines that you buy without a prescription.
Avoid alcohol.
Store in a cool, dry place away from the reach of children. Protect from light.
Medicines must not be used past the expiry date.
This medicine should be discarded after completion of treatment and should not be stored for future use.
