Indications/Uses
Add-on therapy in patients w/ mild to moderate persistent asthma who are inadequately controlled on inhaled corticosteroids & in whom "as-needed" short-acting β-agonists provide inadequate clinical control of asthma. Symptomatic relief of seasonal allergic rhinitis. Prophylaxis of exercise-induced asthma.
Dosage/Direction for Use
Adult & adolescent ≥15 yr 10 mg once daily.
Administration
May be taken with or without food.
Contraindications
Special Precautions
Not to be used in acute asthma attacks. Not to be abruptly substituted for inhaled or oral corticosteroids. Systemic eosinophilia may present during therapy. Patients w/ aspirin-sensitive asthma. Rare cases of drowsiness or dizziness which may affect ability to drive a car or operate machinery. Severe hepatic impairment. Pregnancy & lactation. Not to be used in childn <15 yr.
Adverse Reactions
Headache; abdominal pain. Upper resp infection; diarrhea, nausea, vomiting; elevated levels of serum transaminases (ALT, AST); rash; pyrexia.
Drug Interactions
Decreased AUC w/ phenobarb. Caution in use w/ CYP 3A4, 2C8 & 2C9 inducers eg, phenytoin, phenobarb & rifampicin. Increased systemic exposure w/ gemfibrozil.
