Why do I need this medicine?
Metronidazole is used to treat bacterial infections of the vagina.
How do I use this medicine?
Use Metronidazole exactly as directed by your doctor or according to the instructions on the label. Do not use more or less than instructed by your doctor.

It is best to use it at bedtime. Try to use it at the same time each day.

To use this medicine, follow these steps:
  1. Wash your hands thoroughly.
  2. Open the tube by puncturing the metal seal with the pointed tip of the cap.
  3. Disposable applicators are provided to help you apply the gel into the vagina. Screw the end of the applicator securely onto the tube.
  4. Slowly squeeze the tube such that the medication fills the applicator completely.
  5. The applicator plunger will stop moving once the applicator is full. Do not overfill by pushing it past this point.
  6. Unscrew the applicator.
  7. Lie on your back with both knees bent and legs apart.
  8. Hold the applicator at the middle portion.
  9. Gently insert the applicator into the vagina. Insert only as far as it will comfortably go.
  10. Slowly press the applicator plunger until it stops. This will deposit the medication into the vagina.
  11. Gently withdraw the applicator.
Use this medicine at regular intervals. Complete the entire course of medicine.
What should I do if I have forgotten to use this medicine?
Apply the missed dose as soon as you remember. If it is almost time for your next dose, skip the missed dose and return to your normal dosing schedule.

DO NOT double a dose under any circumstances.

If you often forget to use your medicine, let your doctor and pharmacist know.
When should I not use this medicine?
Do not use Metronidazole if you ever had an allergic reaction (rashes, breathlessness, swollen eyes) to Metronidazole or any similar medicine such as tinidazole.

Do not use this medicine if you are currently taking or have taken medicines to treat alcoholism such as disulfiram within the past 2 weeks.

Do not consume alcohol during therapy or 3 days of therapy discontinuation.
What should I take note of while using this medicine?
Inform your doctor if you have the following conditions:
  • with or a history of blood disorder
  • liver disease
Let your doctor know if you are pregnant or breastfeeding.

Avoid any contact of Metronidazole with your eyes. If an accidental contact occurs, rinse it immediately with water. Alert your doctor if you start to have any problems with your eyes.

You should also avoid the use of vaginal products (e.g. tampons, douches) and engage in sexual contact until the doctor certifies that you are cleared from the infection.

If you are going for certain blood tests, inform your doctor that you are using Metronidazole.
What side effects could I experience?
Metronidazole may cause any of the following side effects: abnormal vaginal discharge, itching, burning or swelling in or around the vagina, pelvic discomfort, abdominal pain, nausea, vomiting, headache, dizziness and a metallic taste in your mouth.

Inform your doctor if any of these side effects do not go away or are severe, or if you experience other side effects.
Can I use this with other medicines?
Do not use this medicine if you are currently taking or have taken medicines to treat alcoholism such as disulfiram within the past 2 weeks.

Inform your doctor and pharmacist if you are taking any of these medicines:
  • blood-thinning medicine e.g. warfarin 
  • medicine used to treat alcoholism e.g. disulfiram
  • medicine for mood disorder e.g. lithium
  • medicines used in organ transplant or certain immune disorders e.g. ciclosporin
  • medicines for stomach problems e.g. cimetidine
  • medicines for cancer e.g. fluorouracil, carmustine 
This list does not include all medicines that may interact with Metronidazole.

Let your doctor know if you are using any other vaginal preparations, such as a vaginal douche or other medication that is applied in the vagina.

Always notify your doctor and pharmacist if you are taking or using any other medicines, including herbal tonics such as traditional Chinese medicines, supplements and medicines that you buy without a prescription.
What special dietary instructions should I follow?
Avoid alcohol.
How should I store this medicine?
Store in a cool, dry place away from the reach of children.

Do not allow to freeze. If frozen, this medicine will become ineffective and should not be used.

Medicines must not be used past the expiry date.
